Are there gay clubs in Malta?

Yes, but only one gay club that's open all the time: the Michelangelo Club Lounge, in Paceville. The island is small, and so is the community, so gay nightlife mostly happens through parties held in ordinary clubs, a few openly LGBT bars in Valletta, and Pride in September. Good news: almost all the bars and clubs on the island are welcoming.

Michelangelo Club Lounge, Paceville's gay club

Michelangelo is on the St Rita Steps (Triq Santa Rita), the pedestrian staircase that starts from St George's Road, on the first level of the Qube building. It has two floors: a bar, a dance floor, a lounge. It opens around 10pm and closes around 4am; sources disagree on the days (every night, or Wednesday to Sunday), but it's packed at weekends, all year round.

The crowd mixes Maltese people and tourists. For entry, a travel blog mentions €10 with 2 drinks on weeknights and €15 with 2 drinks at weekends; these prices aren't dated, so check on the spot. Reviews are mixed: good atmosphere and smiling staff for some, a smoky room for others.

The queer parties not to miss

  • LOLLIPOP: the best-known queer pop party on the island, once or twice a month since 2016, in venues that change. It has hosted DJs like Horse Meat Disco and Jodie Harsh. During Pride, it runs the official after-party and a closing pool party.
  • NERVE: Euro-pop, Eurovision and drag, with a rather young crowd. During Pride 2025, NERVE played at Marrakech, Gianpula's open-air room.
  • Queer parties in bars: Maori, in Valletta, hosts a queer party every month; Kaktus runs techno parties on Fridays and discos on Sundays.

The 2027 dates haven't been announced yet: follow LOLLIPOP and NERVE on Instagram. Worth noting: the Mighty Hoopla Malta festival, planned for late September 2026, was cancelled in May 2026.

LGBT and welcoming bars

Bar Where The style
Café Society 13 St John Street, Valletta Small pop bar, you drink sitting on the steps; rainbow flag
Da Gino St John Street, Valletta (opposite) Welcoming bar
Kween 131 Merchants Street, Valletta Presents itself as Valletta's queer bar (new in 2025)
Kaktus Ta' Xbiex seafront Queer café-bar: techno, talks, poetry
Maori St Elmo Bay, Valletta Very welcoming bar, monthly queer party

What has closed: Klozet in Paceville (the announcement of its return dates from 2019, nothing since) and the Birdcage Lounge in Rabat. There's also no gay sauna on the island.

Malta Pride

Malta Pride takes place every year in September in Valletta. In 2026, it ran from 4 to 13 September, with the march on Saturday 12 September, and a march in Victoria (Gozo) on 5 September. It's organised by Allied Rainbow Communities. The first march dates from 2004; in 2023, Valletta hosted EuroPride. The 2027 dates haven't been published yet on maltapride.com.

Can you be openly gay in Malta?

Yes. Malta opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2017 and was, in 2016, the first country in Europe to ban conversion therapy. In the ILGA-Europe ranking of LGBT rights, Malta was 1st for ten years (2016-2025); in 2026, it's 2nd, just behind Spain. Many websites still say "number 1": that hasn't been true since May 2026.

In practice, couples hold hands without any problem in Valletta, Sliema or Paceville; in the small villages, which are more traditional, people are a bit more reserved.

Our parties, open to everyone

Malta Adventures doesn't organise gay parties. But our parties are open to everyone, in clubs where the community goes out too: Gianpula (where NERVE played during Pride 2025), Sky Club and Toy Room in Paceville, a few minutes' walk from Michelangelo.
